Review: Scary Movie 4

The plot? Do you honestly expect me to provide you with a synopsis? Here’s an idea: Ask the filmmakers, I bet they can’t provide you with one either. Let’s just say our heroines Anna Faris and Regina King are faced with a bunch of lukewarm genre movie parodies.

 

2006 David Zucker (“The Naked Gun!”) spoof of all kinds of popular films (“Saw”, “The Grudge” remake, “The Village”, “Brokeback Mountain”, “The War of the Worlds”, “Million Dollar Baby”) has some chuckle-inducing moments to be sure (an hilarious musical cue provides laughs during the otherwise homophobic “Brokeback Mountain” parody), but the plot of the film is…well, bizarrely structured. The film runs through several genre pieces, some that just don’t fit, though I’ll give Leslie Nielsen’s extraneous U.S. President schtick a pass because it’s the funniest bit. This plays as though the plots for each of these films are running at the same time, so that Craig Bierko’s (admittedly amusing) Tom Cruise in “War of the Worlds” gets to meet up with Anna Faris’ parody of Sarah Michelle Gellar in “The Grudge”…and it just plays out weirdly and totally incoherently. Given that Zucker and co-writer Abrahams are pretty talented guys, one expected more from this, even if it is the fourth instalment in a franchise that was mediocre to begin with. At least there aren’t any Wayans’ in this one.

 

You’ll probably laugh, but I doubt you’ll remember terribly much of what you were laughing at the next morning.

Review: Cinderella (1950)

The story of poor young Cinderella (voiced by Ilene Woods), treated as a servant by her nasty stepmother (voiced by Eleanor Audley), and dismissed by her thoroughly rotten, ugly stepsisters. Her only friends are a group of mice, who are forever being menaced by a cat named Lucifer (or as I call him, Grumpy Cheshire Cat). The King (hoping to find a wife for his charming son) is throwing a ball and every available young woman is invited to attend, and Cinderella is most excited to go. However, her stepmother and stepsisters do all they can to prevent this from happening. Review: Eugenie de Sade

Eugenie (Soledad Miranda) makes a deathbed confession to author/biographer (Jesus ‘Jess’ Franco himself), recounting the tale of how her depraved stepfather (Paul Muller) groomed her into a life of depravity, debauchery, and murder.   Not to be confused with the similarly titled “Eugenie…The Story of Her Journey into Perversion” (by the same director) or “Justine de Sade” (which is not to be confused with Franco’s own “Justine” for that matter), this 1973 Marquis de Sade adaptation from writer-director Jesus Franco ( “99 Women” , “A Virgin Among the Living Dead” ) is perhaps the perfect marriage of Franco, sleazy material, and actors. Basically this is what Franco’s “She Killed in Ecstasy” might’ve been like if it were based on a Marquis de Sade work. There’s a few slow spots here and there, but overall I actually think this is Franco’s best film.
